Dr. Elías Forero

Physician specialized in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and epidemiology, who, after beginning his experience in classical analysis, decided to become a psychoanalyst without abandoning his medical practice. In this process, he came into contact with Freudian psychosomatic psychoanalysis, which he began applying to his patients, especially those with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis, achieving therapeutic success rates of over 90% in long-term remission.

This result led him to deepen his study of general Freudian psychoanalysis alongside training analysts from different countries and later to specialize in Freudian psychosomatic psychoanalysis. Over time, he has treated an increasing number of patients with various somatic illnesses, refining his technique and achieving increasingly solid therapeutic results.

He has worked closely with a group of training psychoanalysts with classical IPA backgrounds, both nationally and internationally, with whom he founded a working group: the Psychosomatic Society of Colombia, a space where he has developed and deepened these subjects over the past decade.

As an internist gastroenterologist with nearly three decades of experience, he understands firsthand the limitations of Western allopathic medicine, especially in the treatment of chronic illnesses and most cancers, while also recognizing its great usefulness in acute and infectious diseases. This experience has led him to deeply explore psychosomatic psychoanalysis as a complementary therapeutic approach.

Likewise, he has sought to enrich this knowledge through studies in India on the Eastern psychosomatic perspective, particularly in relation to yogic sciences, where he found important parallels with his clinical practice. This complementarity has allowed him to advance in the integration of Western and Eastern approaches.

All of this has led him to deepen his work in psychosomatics and refine his classical Freudian training, with the purpose of spreading this knowledge as a foundation for the development of his group’s psychosomatic psychoanalytic work.

In his personal analytical journey, he has been in psychoanalysis for more than 20 years with psychoanalysts from various orientations. He trained as an IPA-affiliated psychoanalyst (International Psychoanalytical Association) within a local Freudian society. Later, he devoted five years to the self-directed study of Freud’s work, further deepening his understanding alongside training analysts from major psychoanalytic societies in Argentina and Colombia. At the same time, he trained in psychosomatic psychoanalysis with one of the most recognized societies in this field in Argentina.

Finally, he expanded his training in Eastern psychosomatic conceptions through study and practice trips to specialized centers in yogic sciences in India, which provided practical tools for the treatment of his patients.

Over the last decade, in addition to his work as a medical specialist, he has directed a local psychosomatic psychoanalytic foundation dedicated to the research and treatment of patients with somatic illnesses through Freudian psychosomatic psychoanalysis. His purpose is to contribute to a future in which humanity understands the unconscious fantasies associated with somatic and mental illnesses at the individual, family, social, and cultural levels.

Currently, he dedicates his life to the development of general psychoanalysis and psychosomatic psychoanalysis, as well as to the treatment of somatic illness, integrating traditional allopathic medicine with the contributions of Freudian psychoanalysis and certain concepts from Eastern psychosomatics. His approach seeks to offer increasingly individualized and holistic treatment, aimed at helping patients go through and resolve the life crisis that gave rise to their illness.
